A mixture consisting of 20 g. (0.114 mole) of 4-methoxy-o-phenylenediamine and 11 g. (0.114 mole) of triethylamine dissolved in 200 ml. of diethyl oxalate was refluxed overnight for a period of approximately 16 hours. Upon completion of this step, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature (~20° C.) and filtered to remove the desired product. After washing with ethanol, there were ultimately obtained 14.8 g. (68%) of pure 2,3-dihydroxy-6-methoxyquinoxaline, m.p. >300° C. Mass Spectrum: m/e, 192 (P).
