A mixture of 4-(chloroacetyl)-1,3-dimethyl-1,4,9,10-tetrahydropyrrolo[3,2-b][1,5]-benzodiazepin-10-one (2.0 g, 0.0066 mol), dimethylformamide (30 ml), triethylamine (1 ml, 0.0071 mol) and 2-[(diethylamino)methyl]piperidine (1.7 g, 0.01 mol) is heated to 30°-40° C. for two hours with stirring. The solvent is distilled off under water jet vacuum, the residue taken up in water (10 ml), made alkline with potassium carbonate and extracted exhaustively with dichloromethane. The combined methylene chloride extracts are dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated. The crude product thus obtained is purified by chromatography on silica gel using dichloromethane/methanol (9:1 v/v). After recrystallization from ethyl acetate/methanol (95:5) the desired compound (1.4 g) is obtained in the form of colorless crystals, Mp. 176°-178° C.
