A mixture of 3,4-dihydro-5-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-6-methyl-2(1H)-pyridinone (0.94 g), chloroacetone (0.43 g) and potassium carbonate (0.64 g), with a catalytic amount of potassium iodide, was stirred and heated under reflux in acetone (80 ml) for 16 hr. The solvent was evaporated and the residue partitioned between water and ethyl acetate. The organic layer was dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to give 3,4-dihydro-5-(4-acetonyloxyphenyl)-6-methyl-2(1H)-pyridinone as a solid.
