To a solution of methyl (S)-2-(t-butoxycarbonylamino)-3-(4-biphenylyl)-propionate (1.25 mmol) in ethyl acetate (2 mL), is added a saturated solution of anhydrous hydrogen chloride in ethyl acetate (4.5 mL). The solution is stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. The reaction mixture is concentrated to obtain methyl (S)-2-amino-3-(4-biphenylyl)-propionate hydrochloride, m.p. 205°-207°; [60 ]D20 +11.8° (c=1, CH3OH), also named (S)-(4-biphenyl)-alanine methyl ester hydrochloride.
