A mixture of 1-(2-tetrahydropyranyloxy-4-acetoxy-5-propoxypentane (11.5 g., 0.42 mole), methanol (700 ml.), concentrated hydrochloric acid (3 ml.) and ethyl acetate (70 ml.) is stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The reaction mixture is poured into cold H2O (1500 ml.) and the organic layer is extracted with ether. The combined extracts are washed with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution, then brine, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent is removed under vacuum and the residual oil is distilled to give the title compound as a light yellow oil.
