Procedure

To a solution of 2-amino-5-mercapto-l,3,4-thiadiazole (4.0 g) and ethyl acetoacetate (4.3 g) in 50 ml ethanol, piperidine (2.55 g) was slowly added. The mixture was refluxed for seven hours and then allowed to stand overnight at room temperature. The formed crystals were collected by filtration and dissolved in 100 ml of water. The pH was adjusted to 2.0, and the formed crystals were collected and washed with 20 ml of water, affording 3.8 g of the objective compound as colorless crystals.
