A mixture of 4.76 parts of 6-chloro-N4 methyl-4,5-pyrimidinediamine and 7.2 parts of urea was stirred and heated for 1 hour at 180° C. After cooling, the residue was suspended in water. The product was filtered off and dried, yielding 3.3 parts (60%) of 6-chloro-9-methyl-9H-purin-8-ol (intermediate 174).
