Iodomethyl (0.05 mL) was added to mixture THF (5 mL) and magnesium (turnings, 0.719 g) with stirring. 7-bromonaphtho[2,1-b]furan (6.09 g) was added and the mixture was refluxed for 2 h. The resulting mixture was cooled to 0° C. and a solution of 4-formyl-1-trityl-1H-imidazole (4.71 g) in THF (40 mL) was added. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h and aq. ammonium chloride was added. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate, dried and concentrated. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel (eluent; hexane:ethyl acetate=2:1→1:2) to give the titled compound (2.30 g) as a colorless solid.
