Procedure

To a solution of 4.85 g of methyl (E)-3β-hydroxypregna-5,20-diene-21-carboxylate (Pouzar, V. et al., Collect. Czech. Chem. Commun, 1990, 55,1243), in 200 ml of anhydrous tetrahydrofurane, 81 ml of i-Bu2AlH (1M) in hexane were added dropwise in a nitrogen atmosphere at -78° C. After two hours the reaction mixture was treated with an aqueous solution of citric acid (30 g in 100 ml of water). The mixture was filtered on Celite and the residue washed with ethyl acetate. The organic solution was dehydrated over anhydrous sodium sulfate and evaporated to dryness under vacuum, to give 4.25 g of (E)-21-hydroxymethylpregna-5,20-dien-3β-ol as a white solid.

Workup
