Procedure

Potassium tert. butoxide (5.84 g, 0.052 mol ) was added to a solution of acrylic acid (4.47 g, 0.045 mol) in DMF (220 ml). Butyl chloromethyl carbonate (Example li, 6.5 g, 0.052 mol) in DMF (150 ml) was added to the resulting suspension. 18crown-6 (0.6 g) was then added and the reaction mixture was left with stirring at room temperature for 2 days. The reaction mixture was filtered and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was dissolved in chloroform (100 ml) and washed with saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate (50 ml) and water (50 ml). The organic phase was dried (MgSO4) and the solvent removed under reduced pressure. Flash chromatography gave 4.57 g of the title product.
