A mixture of 37.5 parts of 6-(phenylmethyl)-1-oxa-6-azaspiro[2.5]octane, 24.9 parts of ethyl 4-hydroxybenzoate, 20.7 parts of potassium carbonate and 200 parts of 4-methyl-2-pentanone was stirred overnight at reflux temperature. After cooling, water was added. The precipitated product was filtered off, washed with water and crystallized from 1,1'-oxybisethane. The product was filtered off and dried, yielding 23 parts (41.5%) of ethyl 4-[[4-hydroxy-1-(phenylmethyl)-4-piperidinyl]methoxy]benzoate; mp. 100.2° C. (int. 78).
