4-Hydroxybenzofuran (1.0 g., 0.00746 M), ethyl 4-bromobutanoate (1.46 g, 0.00746 M), anhydrous potassium carbonate (1.13 g), sodium iodide (50 mg) and 95% ethanol (20 ml) were reacted together to give ethyl 4-(4-benzofuranyloxy)butanoate which was subsequently hydrolysed, as previously described for the preparation of 5-(4-benzofuranyloxy)pentanoic acid, to give 4-(4-benzofuranyloxy)butanoic acid, m.p. 91°-93° C. (Found: C, 65.50; H, 5.40. C12H12O4 requires C, 65.45; H, 5.45%).
