886 mg of p-t-butyl-N-[6-chloro-5-(o-methoxyphenoxy)-4-pyrimidinyl]benzenesulfonamide were added to a sodium glycolate solution from 3.0 g of ethylene glycol and 138 mg of sodium. The reaction mixture was stirred at 95° C. under argon for 4 hours. Thereafter, the ethylene glycol was distilled off and the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and 1N hydrochloric acid. The organic phase was dried and the solvent was distilled off. The residue was crystallized from diisopropyl ether. There were obtained 870 mg of p-t-butyl-N-[6-(2-hydroxyethoxy)-5-(o-methoxyphenoxy)-4-pyrimidinyl]benzenesulfonamide. M.p. 143°-148° C.
