To a solution of compound 5.HCl (219 mg, 1.00 mmol) in water (10 mL) containing sodium bicarbonate (500 mg, 5.95 mmol) was added a solution of benzoyl chloride (0.14 mL, 1.20 mmol) in dichloromethane (5.0 mL). The mixture was vigorously stirred for 16 h at room temperature. The reaction mixture was acidified with 0.1N HCl and the crude product was extracted with ethyl acetate (40 mL×3). The combined organic extracts were dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo to dryness. The residue was purified on a short silica gel column using chloroform/methanol (2/1) as the eluant to give N-benzoyl-(2R,3S)-3-phenylisoserine (6) (205 mg, 72%) as a white solid.
