Procedure

Sibutramine free base (2.25 g) was dissolved in MTBE (20 mL) and that solution was added to 20 mL 1M HCl in diethyl ether. The reaction mixture was stinted for 30 minutes, and the solid was collected by filtration to give 1.73 g after drying. The product was characterized by 1H NMR.
