To a suspension of 4-(2-chlorophenyl)-5-cyano-6-formyl-4,7-dihydro-2H-pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine (400 mg) in methanol (10 ml) was added sodium borohydride (53 mg) under ice-cooling and the mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 30 minutes. 10% Hydrochloric acid was added to the reaction mixture, and a saturated sodium hydrogencarbonate solution was added. The precipitated crystals were collected by filtration and washed with ethanol to give the title compound (295 mg) as yellow crystals.
