Procedure

1.00 g of 2-(cis-3-hydroxy-cyclohexyl)-2-methyl-propionic acid ethyl ester are dissolved in 30 ml of methanol. 30 ml of a 1M aqueous lithium hydroxide solution are added and the mixture is stirred for 16 hours at room temperature. The reaction mixture is neutralised with 1M HCl and concentrated by evaporation. The title compound is identified from the residue by means of flash chromatography (SiO2 60F) based on its Rf value.
