Platinum on carbon (10 wt. % loading (dry basis), matrix activated carbon, 200 mg) was added to a solution of tert-butyl 4-[3-(1-{[(benzyloxy)carbonyl]amino}ethyl)-5-chloro-2-methoxy-6-methylphenyl]-3,6-dihydropyridine-1(2H)-carboxylate (200 mg, 0.388 mmol) in ethanol (30 mL)/0.25 M HCl in water (3.9 mL, 0.97 mmol) and then the reaction was stirred at room temperature under 30 psi of hydrogen atmosphere for 3 d. The mixture was adjusted to basic pH with ammonia and then the solvent was removed. The residue was diluted with methylene chloride, washed with sat. NaHCO3, water, brine, dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated to give the crude desired product (0.15 g) which was used in the next step without further purification. LCMS calculated for C20H32ClN2O3 (M+H)+: m/z=383.2. found: 383.3.
