Procedure

1,3-Bis(methoxymethoxy)-5-(1,1-dimethylheptyl)-benzene (50) (1 equiv.) was dissolved in dry THF (10 mL). The solution was cooled to −10° C. and n-BuLi (1.1 equiv. using 1.6 solution in hexanes) was added dropwise. The mixture was stirred for an additional 1.5 h, then it was cooled to −78° C. and (MeO)3B (5 equiv.) was added. The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred overnight. The mixture was diluted with water, stirred for 30 min and the pH was adjusted to 4 with dilute aqueous HCl. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc, the organic layer was dried (MgSO4) and the solvent was evaporated. Purification by flash column chromatography (hexane-acetone) gave the title compound in 81% yield.
