Procedure

To a solution of 60.1 (0.7 g, 7.5 mmol) in dry acetone (50 mL), under a nitrogen atmosphere, was added 18-crown-6 (1.584 g, 6 mmol), anhydrous potassium carbonate (2.07 g, 15 mmol), and ethyl 7-bromoheptanoate (1.18 g, 5 mmol) successively. The mixture was stirred at 50° C. overnight and then it was cooled to room temperature and the solvent removed in vacuo. The residue obtained was partitioned between diethyl ether (50 mL), and water (10 mL). The organic phase was separated and the aqueous layer extracted with diethyl ether. The combined organic layer was washed with brine, dried (MgSO4) and the solvent was removed under reduced pressure. Purification by flash column chromatography (20% diethyl ether-hexane) afforded 61.1 (1.72 g, 92% yield) as a colorless liquid.
