A solution of diethylphosphonoacetic acid tert-butyl ester (1.54 g, 6.09 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (3 mL) was added dropwise to a suspension of 60% sodium hydride (0.19 g, 4.87 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (50 mL) with stirring at 0° C. After stirring at room temperature for 20 minutes, a solution of 5-formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid benzyl ester (1.0 g, 4.06 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (3 mL) was added, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The mixture was worked up according to a conventional method, and the object product was extracted by column chromatography (10-30% ethyl acetate/hexane mixed solvent) to give the title compound (1.17 g)
