Procedure

A mixture of 6-methoxy-indeno[2,1-b]pyridin-9-one (2.00 g), 10% palladium on carbon (0.30 g), 4 M aqueous hydrochloric acid (6 mL), and methanol (100 mL) is shaken under hydrogen atmosphere (3 bar) at room temperature for 4 h. PtO2 (0.20 g) is then added and shaking is continued under hydrogen atmosphere (1 bar) at room temperature for another 36 h. The catalysts are separated by filtration and the filtrate is concentrated. The residue is basified by the addition of 2 M aqueous NaOH solution and the resulting mixture is extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined extracts are washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4), and the solvent is evaporated. The residue is chromatographed on silica gel (dichloromethane/methanol containing 1% NH3 90:10→75:25) to give the title compound as a colorless oil. Yield: 1.00 g (52% of theory); LC (method 1): tR=1.50 min; Mass spectrum (ESI+): m/z=204 [m+H]+.
