Procedure
3,3,7-trimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1-benzofuran-4-ol (Intermediate 184, 0.9 g, 5.0 mmol) was dissolved in CH3CN (5 mL) in the presence of 2-chloro-5-nitropyridine (790 mg, 5.0 mmol) and K2CO3 (1.72 g, 12.5 mmol) and the resulting suspension was heated to 60° C. for 1.5 hrs. The mixture was then cooled to room temperature and diluted with water and ethyl acetate. Two phases were separated and the organic layer was washed with brine, then dried over Na2SO4 and evaporated to dryness, The residue was purified by flash chromatography on silica gel using cyclohexane to cyclohexane/ethyl acetate 90:10 as eluents affording the title compound (0.92 g) as yellowish solid.
