A mixture of 360 mg of 2-butyl-5-cyano-4-(1-hydroxy-1-methylpropyl)-1-{4-[2-(tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]phenyl}methylimidazole [prepared as described in step (b) above], 266 mg of lithium hydroxide monohydrate and 3.6 ml of water was stirred in an oil bath kept at 115° C. for 16 hours. At the end of this time, the reaction mixture was cooled and 6.4 ml of 1N aqueous hydrochloric acid were added to the mixture, whilst ice-cooling. The crystals which precipitated were collected by filtration, to give 302 mg of the title compound, melting at 152°-154° C.
