Procedure

A solution of (R)-4-chloro-5-methyl-6,7-dihydro-5H-cyclopenta[d]pyrimidine (5.0 g, 30 mmol) in CHCl3 (80 mL) at 0° C. was treated with m-CPBA (12 g, 53 mmol) in portions. The reaction was stirred at about room temperature overnight. The reaction was cooled to 0° C. and to this was added Na2SO3 (25 g, 200 mmol) in water (100 mL) (slurry), followed by dropwise addition of Na2CO3 (14 g, 130 mmol) in water (100 mL). The mixture was stirred for about 30 minutes. The aqueous phase was extracted with CHCl3. The organic phase was dried with MgSO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure at low temperature (<25° C.) to afford the crude (R)-4-chloro-5-methyl-6,7-dihydro-5H-cyclopenta[d]pyrimidine 1-oxide (5.5 g, 100%) which was not purified further. 1H NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz) δ 8.66 (s, 1H), 3.50 (m, 1H), 3.20 (m, 2H), 2.44 (m, 1H), 1.90 (m, 1H), 1.37 (d, J=7.2 Hz, 3H).
