L-aspartic acid di-tert-butyl ester (0.84 g, 3.0 mmol) and 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole (2.4 g, 15 mmol) were dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (10 ml), and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, ethyl acetate was added, and the mixture was washed with 1N hydrochloric acid (15 mL) and saturated brine. After drying over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane/ethyl acetate) to give the title compound (0.72 g, 2.1 mmol).
