6-(6-bromo-pyridin-3-yl)-4,7-dihydro-1-thia-4,5-diaza-cyclopenta[a]pentalene (0.16 g, 0.5 mmol) was added with a solution of bromine in glacial acetic acid (0.5 mL of a 3 M solution). The reaction mixture was heated at 80° C. for 12 hr. The solution was cooled to room temperature and poured into ice water. The resultant precipitate was filtered, washed with water to provide the corresponding 2-Bromo-6-(6-bromo-pyridin-3-yl)-4,7-dihydro-1-thia-4,5-diaza-cyclopenta[a]pentalene (0.18 g, 0.48 mmol) as yellow solid in 95% yield.
