Procedure

Iodomethane (0.4 mL, 6.39 mmol) was added to a suspension of 3-chloro-5-phenoxymethyl-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid (265 mg, 1.92 mmol) and K2CO3 (265 mg, 1.92 mmol) in DMF (15 mL) in a sealed tube. The mixture was stirred at RT for 16 h. The solvent was evaporated in vacuo and the mixture was diluted with H2O and extracted with EtOAc. The organic layer was separated, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and the solvents evaporated in vacuo. The crude product was purified by flash column chromatography (silica; EtOAc in DCM 0/100 to 70/30). The desired fractions were collected and the solvents evaporated in vacuo to yield 3-chloro-5-phenoxymethyl-pyridine-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester (258 mg, 73%) as a colorless oil.
