A mixture of palladium (II) EnCat (0.1 equiv), potassium carbonate (3.0 equiv), 4-iodophenol and ethyl(2R)-2-methyl-2-(methylsulfonyl)-4-[4-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)phenyl]butanoate, which may be prepared as in Preparation 8A, was heated to 80° C. in 10:1 1,4-dioxane-water to provide the title compound (54%) after purification by flash chromatography on silica gel. MS (LCMS) m/z 399.5 (M+Na). 1H NMR (400 MHz, CHLOROFORM-d) δ ppm 1.33 (t, J=7.13 Hz, 3H) 1.72 (s, 3H) 2.18-2.28 (m, 1H) 2.47-2.58 (m, 2H) 2.72-2.84 (m, 1H) 3.04 (s, 3H) 4.22-4.31 (m, 2H) 4.91 (s, 1H) 6.85-6.92 (m, 2H) 7.17-7.24 (m, 2H) 7.40-7.51 (m, 4H).
