To a solution of ethyl 4-(4′-fluorobiphenyl-4-yl)-2-(methylsulfonyl)butanoate in THF (2.2 mL) and methanol (0.6 mL) was added a solution of lithium hydroxide in water (37 mg, 1.54 mmol, 0.6 mL water) and stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. The mixture was diluted with water (30 mL) and washed with Et2O 50 mL. The organic layer was discarded. The aqueous layer was acidified with 0.5N HCl and the white suspension was re-extracted with Et2O. The ether extract was washed with brine 50 mL, dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford the title compound as a white solid (113 mg, 87.5%) MS (LC/MS) m/z 335.1 (M−1)
