6-amino-2-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide was prepared as follows. A solution of 25 g 6-nitroquinoline, 560 g of trifluoroacetic acid, and 60 g of 30% hydrogen peroxide was heated at reflux for 6 hr. After checking for the absence of peroxides, the mixture was cooled and poured into 3750 mL of water. The product was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried under vacuum at 60° C., to give 6-nitro-2-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide (5.48 g, 19% yield). 1HNMR data for this compound (DMSO) was as follows: δ 8.8 (s, 1H), 8.4 (d, 1H), 8.1 (d, 1H), 7.8 (d, 1H), 6.9 (d, 1H).
