To a solution of the free base 7,8-dimethoxy-5-phenyl-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydrobenzo[h]isoquinoline, (390 mg, 1.2 mmol, from Example 200) in THF (25 mL) was added ethyl formate (40 mL). The resulting solution was heated at reflux for 17 hours, concentrated, and the concentrate was chased with THF. The crude product was used directly in the next step.
