3-mercaptobenzoic acid (840 mg) and the resultant product (2.1 g) of (1-2) were dissolved in dimethylformamide (50 mL), potassium carbonate (2.1 g) was added, and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hrs. Methyl iodide (0.34 mL) was added, and the mixture was further stirred for 1 hr. Water was poured into the reaction mixture, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with saturated brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The obtained residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography using a mixed solvent of chloroform and methanol as an eluent. The solvent was evaporated from the eluent to give the title compound (2.0 g) as a white amorphous solid.
