Procedure

2,3,4-Trifluoro-6-nitroaniline (5 g, 26 mmol), 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (3.5 g, 28.6 mmol) and Cs2CO3 (10.5 g, 32.6 mmol) were stirred in 150 mL of dimethylformamide at 65 degrees Centigrade for approximately 18 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated and the residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate and water. The aqueous layer was extracted three times with ethyl acetate. The organic layers were combined, washed five times with brine, dried over Mg2SO4 and concentrated onto basic alumina. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane to ethyl acetate gradient) to give 4-[(3-amino-2,6-difluoro-4-nitrophenyl)oxy]benzaldehyde. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) delta ppm 7.29 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2 H) 7.46 (s., 2 H) 7.93 (d, J=8.8 Hz, 2 H) 7.98 (dd, J=11.0, 1.7 Hz, 1 H) 9.93 (s., 1 H)
