A mixture of triphosgene (3.2 g, 10.85 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (10 mL) was slowly treated with pyridine (1.72 g, 21.72 mmol) via syringe. The resulting white suspension was then treated portionwise with 1-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]piperazine (500 mg, 2.17 mmol). The reaction mixture was allowed to stir at 25° C. for 18 h. At this time, the reaction was slowly quenched by the addition of water. The aqueous layer was extracted with methylene chloride. The organics were washed with a saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford 4-(3-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)piperazine-1-carbonyl chloride (500 mg, 79%). The NMR spectrum obtained on the sample is compatible with its structure.
