Procedure

THF (10 mL) was added to magnesium (353 mg, 14.5 mmol), and furthermore 1-bromo-4-ethylbenzene (2 mL, 14.5 mmol) was added dropwise thereto and the mixture was heated to reflux for one hour. The reaction mixture was cooled to 0° C., and a solution of 3-bromo-4-ethoxybenzaldehyde (2.21 g, 9.68 mmol) in THF (5 mL) was added thereto and the reaction mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 1.5 hours. To the reaction mixture, a saturated ammonium chloride aqueous solution was added and the resulting mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with a saturated sodium chloride aqueous solution and dried over magnesium sulfate. The residue obtained by distilling the solvent under reduced pressure was purified by silica gel column chromatography [developing solution=n-hexane to n-hexane:ethyl acetate (3:1)] to obtain the title compound (2.83 g, 88%).
