Procedure

A mixture of 2-(2,2-diethoxy-ethylsulfanyl)-5-methyl-1H-imidazole-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (10.0 mmol) in aq. HCl (15%, 8.0 mL) is stirred for 1 h at RT and neutralized by addition of aq. Na2CO3 solution. The obtained precipitate is filtered off to give the desired product which is used without further purification.
