A mixture of ethyl 6,7-difluoro-1,4-dihydro-8-methoxy-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylate (1.00 g, 3.53 mmol), iodomehtane (0.450 mL, 7.23 mmol) and K2CO3 (976 mg, 7.06 mmol) in DMF (15 mL) was heated at 50° C. for 1 h. The mixture was concentrated in vacuo and dried under high vacuum. The reaction mixture was poured into ice water and the resulting precipitate was removed by filtration, washed with water and then dried to yield ethyl 1-methyl-6,7-difluoro-1,4-dihydro-8-methoxy-4-oxoquinoline-3-carboxylate (845 mg, 81%) as a colorless solid.
