To a suspension of D-(+)-malic acid (10 g, 75 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (100 mL) was added 2,2-dimethoxypropane (23 g, 225 mmol) and p-toluenesulfonic acid (0.129 g, 0.75 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at rt for 4 h, filtered through silica gel (50% EtOAc/hexane) and concentrated to give the title compound.
