Procedure
4-(4-Chloro-benzenesulfonyl)-3-methyl-4-(2,3,6-trifluoro-phenyl)-butyric acid methyl ester (0.79 g, 1.88 mmol) was dissolved in 10 mL of THF and lithium borohydride (0.5 g, excess) was added. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. 50 mL of water and 50 mL of EtOAc were added. The organic layer washed with brine (50 mL), dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated. The residue was used in next step without further purification (0.71 g, 96%). 1H NMR (CDCl3 400 MHz) δ 7.61 (m, 2H), 7.36 (m, 2H), 7.06 (m, 1H), 6.82 (m, 0.5H), 6.60 (m, 0.5H), 4.79 (m, 0.5H), 4.56 (m, 0.5H), 3.85 (m, 1H), 3.68 (m, 1H), 3.12 (m, 1H), 2.39 (m, 0.5H), 1.95 (m, 0.5H), 1.57 (m, 0.5H), 1.46 (dd, J=4.4 and 5.9 Hz, 1.5H), 1.32 (m, 0.5H), 0.92 (dd, J=7.3 and 9.5 Hz, 1.5H).
