Procedure
A mixture of 2-chloro-5-methyl-4-methylthiopyrimidine (2.5 g, 14 mmol), 3-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrazole (2.3 g, 2.5 mmol) and potassium carbonate (4.8 g, 35 mmol) in 25 mL of N,N-dimethylformamide was heated at 70° C. with stirring for 5 hours. The reaction mixture was then partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was separated, washed twice with water and brine and dried over magnesium sulfate. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure to provide a white solid which was suspended in hexane and filtered to provide 2.4 g of the title compound of Step B as a solid melting at 126-127° C. 1H NMR (CDCl3): δ 8.63 (d, 1H), 8.24 (s, 1H), 6.73 (d, 1H), 2.68 (s, 3H) 2.25 (s, 3H).
