A solution of dimethyl malonate (0.66 g), 1-(bromomethyl)-4-(diethoxymethyl)benzene (2.73 g) in DMF (30 mL) was treated with NaH (0.4 g, 60% in mineral oil). The mixture was stirred for 3 h at room temperature and 1 h at 50° C., and then quenched with 100 mL of saturated NH4Cl. The product was extracted with 200 mL of 1:1 hexane/EtOAc. The extract was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to give the title compound (3 g) which was used without further purification.
