4-Methylbenzenesulfonyl chloride (8.83 g, 46.32 mmol) was added to a solution of tert-butyl (2R)-2-(hydroxymethyl)-1-pyrrolidinecarboxylate (5.48 g, 27.24 mmol) in pyridine (25 ml). The reaction mixture was stirred for 2.5 hrs, after which time the reaction was diluted with ethyl acetate (100 ml) and washed with water (100 ml), saturated copper sulphate solution (100 ml), dried over MgSO4 and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The crude product was purified by column chromatography on silica gel using ethyl acetate:pentane (20:80) as the eluant to afford the title compound as a clear oil, 9.2 g, (95%).
