A mixture of benzyl 2-[3,5-dichloro-2-methyl-6-oxo-1(6H)-pyrazinyl]acetate (preparation 17) (647 mg, 1.98 mmol), tert-butyl (3R)-3-aminomethyl-1-pyrrolidinecarboxylate (preparation 80), (398 mg, 1.98 mmol) and triethylamine (830 ml, 5.95 mmol) in ethyl acetate (25 ml) was heated under reflux for 18 hrs. The cooled mixture was washed consecutively with water, 1N citric acid solution, brine, then dried over MgSO4, and evaporated under reduced pressure to give the desired compound as a gum, (952 mg, 98%).
