Procedure
2,3-Dichloroanisole (120 gm, 0.65 mole) and 4-chlorobutyryl chloride (100 gm, 0.709 mole) were dissolved in methylene chloride (425 ml) and aluminum chloride (98.8 g, 0.741) added portionwise with stirring over 30 minutes. The temperature rose to 32° C. and hydrogen chloride was evolved. After stirring for 3 hours, the mixture was poured into ice containing concentrated hydrochloric acid (80 ml). The layers were separated and the aqueous layer extracted with methylene chloride.
