Procedure

A solution of 5-nitroisoindoline-1,3-dione (1.00 g, 5.20 mmol), benzyl 2-bromoacetate (1.225 ml, 7.81 mmol) and K2CO3 (1.079 g, 7.81 mmol) in DMF (10 ml) was heated at 90° C. for 2 hours. The insoluble inorganic salts were filtered off, and the filtrate was diluted with ethyl acetate and washed with 1N HCl and with brine. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and the solvent was removed under vacuum. The residue was purified by crystallization from MeOH to afford benzyl 2-(5-nitro-1,3-dioxoisoindolin-2-yl)acetate (1.39 g, 4.08 mmol, 78% yield, MS/ESI+ not detectable [MH]+).
