Chloromethyl 2-(4-(4-chlorobenzoyl)phenoxy)-2-methylpropanoate 1 (3.0 g, 8.2 mmol) was dissolved in acetone (50 mL) at room temperature. Sodium iodide (2.4 g, 16.3 mmol, 2 eq) was added and the clear solution was stirred 10 min at room temperature, then heated to 50° C. for 6 hr. The mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with ethyl acetate (200 mL) and filtered. The filtrate was washed with water (3×10 mL) and brine then dried over sodium sulfate. The drying agent was filtered off and the solution was concentrated by rotary evaporation to leave iodomethyl 2-(4-(4-chlorobenzoyl)phenoxy)-2-methylpropanoate 2 as a thick, yellow oil (3.7 g, 99% yield) that was used directly in the next reaction without further purification. 1H-NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.74 (d, 2 H), 7.71 (d, 2 H), 7.45 (d, 2 H), 6.85 (d, 2 H), 5.97, (s, 2 H), 1.67 (s, 6 H) ppm.
