To a stirred solution of tert-butyl (RS)-2-(4-aminophenyl)morpholine-4-carboxylate (3.07 g, CAS-1002726-96-6) in DMF (30 ml) was added NBS (1.96 g) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 15 min. The reaction mixture was then poured into EtOAc and extracted sequentially with water and with saturated brine. The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and then concentrated in vacuo to afford tert-butyl (RS)-2-(4-amino-3-bromophenyl)morpholine-4-carboxylate (4.0 g, quant.) as a light brown solid which was used in the next step without further purification. MS (ISP): 359.0 ([{81Br}M+H]+), 357.0 ([{79Br}M+H]+), 303.0 ([{81Br}M+H—C4H8]+), 301.0 ([{79Br}M+H—C4H8]+).
