To a suspension of compound 56 (6.0 g, 22.6 mmol) in CH2Cl2 (100 mL) were added oxalyl chloride (2.4 mL, 27.1 mmol) and catalytic amounts of DMF at room temperature. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The mixture was evaporated in vacuo and dried under high vacuum. The crude acid chloride was dissolved with benzene (100 mL) and cooled to 0° C. To the reaction mixture was added AlCl3 (6.9 g, 52.0 mmol) portionwise at 0° C. The mixture was stirred at 90° C. for 15 hours. The mixture was cooled to rt and evaporated in vacuo. The residue was cooled to 0° C. and aq. 1N HCl solution was added. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc (150 mL×1). The organic layer was dried over MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to provide the compound 166 (7.33 g, quantitative yield).
