A 5.0 mL solution of 0.125 g of N-(methoxycarbonyl)-4-keto-D-proline methyl ester in ethyl acetate was mixed with 12.5 mg of 5% platinum on alumina under 70 psig of hydrogen at 25° C. After 18 h, the yields of N-(methoxycarbonyl)-cis-4-hydroxy-D-proline methyl ester and N-(methoxycarbonyl)-trans-4-hydroxy-D-proline methyl ester were 98.7% and 1.3%, respectively, with no N-(methoxycarbonyl)-4-keto-D-proline methyl ester remaining.
